When Thread Repair May Be Required

Threaded holes can become damaged through cross-threading, over-torquing, corrosion, or repeated fastener removal and reinstallation over the life of a component. In lightweight aerospace alloys such as aluminum, threads can also wear or strip over time even under normal use, particularly with fasteners that are removed and reinstalled frequently for maintenance.

Whether a damaged thread is a candidate for insert repair, or requires a different corrective action, depends on the extent of the damage, the surrounding wall thickness and edge distance, and the applicable engineering requirement for that part.

How Keensert Thread Repair Works

Keensert-style thread repair generally involves re-tapping the damaged hole to a size that accepts a key-locking insert, then installing the insert using the same general process as a new production installation: cleaning and inspecting the re-tapped hole, driving the insert to the correct depth, and setting the locking keys with broach tooling.

The result is a repaired hole with a solid, mechanically locked thread rather than a hole that has simply been re-tapped to an oversized thread with no additional retention feature.

What Is Typically Needed for a Keensert Thread Repair?

A repair application draws on the same categories of tooling as a new installation, sized for the specific repair.

  • Correct insert: sized and specified for the repair application, not necessarily the same size as the original thread.
  • Drilling equipment: to open the damaged hole to the diameter required for the repair insert.
  • Countersink tooling: where the repair specification calls for entry geometry at the hole opening.
  • Tap: sized for the repair insert being installed.
  • Installation tool: to drive the insert body into the re-tapped hole.
  • Key-driving tool: broach tooling to set the insert's locking keys.
  • Inspection equipment: to verify the completed repair meets the applicable acceptance criteria.
