Keenserts — also referred to as KEENSERTS, keyed inserts, key-locking inserts, or key-locking threaded inserts — are solid threaded bushings that mechanically lock into the parent material after installation. American Precision Assembly installs both standard and metric Keenserts using specialized tooling and controlled procedures, supporting customer engineering drawings and applicable specifications.

Located in Huntington Beach, California, American Precision Assembly serves aerospace and defense customers nationwide with reliable precision assembly services.

01

What Is a Keensert?

A Keensert — generically called a key-locking threaded insert or keyed insert — is a solid externally and internally threaded insert that includes hardened locking keys. Once the insert is driven into a tapped hole, the keys are set into the surrounding parent material, creating a permanent mechanical lock that prevents rotation and pull-out.

Keenserts are used where standard tapped threads are insufficient — in lightweight aerospace alloys such as aluminum and magnesium, in components subject to vibration or repeated fastener cycling, and in thread repair applications where the original thread must be restored to its original size.

Key-locking threaded inserts differ from wire-type inserts (such as Helicoils) in that they are solid rather than coiled, providing greater resistance to rotation and higher pull-out strength in demanding aerospace applications.

  • Stronger internal threads in lightweight aerospace materials
  • Mechanical lock prevents rotation in high-vibration environments
  • Solid construction provides higher pull-out resistance than wire inserts
  • Original thread size is maintained or restored
  • Suitable for repeated fastener removal cycles

03

Aerospace Keensert Installation

Threaded connections in aerospace components must withstand vibration, thermal cycling, repeated maintenance access, and structural loads. Standard tapped threads in lightweight alloys — particularly aluminum — can strip, wear, or loosen over time.

Keenserts and key-locking threaded inserts address these challenges by placing a solid, mechanically locked thread insert into the parent material. The result is a highly reliable threaded interface that maintains integrity under demanding aerospace operating conditions.

Precision installation is essential. Incorrect installation — including misalignment, insufficient key setting, or improper installation method — can compromise the mechanical lock and the integrity of the assembly. American Precision Assembly performs Keensert installation using proper tooling, controlled processes, and quality verification.

  • High pull-out and torque-out resistance
  • Reliable thread retention in aluminum, magnesium, and steel
  • Resistance to vibration-induced loosening
  • Repeatable quality through controlled installation procedures
  • Applicable to new manufacture and thread repair

Installation Methods

The installation method for Keenserts varies depending on the engineering drawing, applicable specification, and customer requirements. American Precision Assembly supports multiple installation methods as directed by the customer's documentation.

Common installation methods include dry installation, primer installation, sealant installation, and grease installation. Broach tooling is used to set the locking keys after the insert body is installed. The specific method and sequence are determined by the applicable specification and customer requirements — not by APA independently.
